Competency-based learning
A competency can be defined as: the ability to show adequate behaviour in authentic professional situations. This behaviour is a mix of knowledge, skills, motivation and personal characteristics. In the IBMS programme you will learn to develop professional competencies (those competencies that are specific for an IBMS graduate) and generic competencies (competencies that are general for all bachelor graduates). To develop these competencies the student will be confronted with a wide variety of professional situations.
Tutor
In making those choices, you are not alone. As a student, you will be allocated a personal tutor with whom you will maintain regular contact. This supervisor is your contact person. He or she will monitor your performance and issue advice. Together with your tutor, you chart out which competences (knowledge, attitudes and skills) you need for your future profession and exactly how you are going to develop these.
Project-based learning
To enable you to do so, the school has developed a system of project-based learning, in which you carry out a number of projects dealing with different aspects of the international marketing and management practice. In groups of approximately six students, you execute the tasks and assignments connected with the projects. In doing so you learn to search and study the relevant literature, to look for the required information (desk research) and to execute field research, if necessary.
By working in teams, you learn how to co-operate, how to participate in meetings, to plan activities and to execute them according to the plan. You learn to develop your leadership skills and to control the quality of the products and processes involved. Finally you learn how to present your results to the lecturers and/or companies. In addition to the projects you are trained in specific skills. The skills training focuses on improving business communication skills, professional skills and management skills.
